Carter’s Orchids December 2, 2017

Come join Emerald Tours on our journey to Carter’s Orchids. We will attend their open house, learn pottery and learn how they grow the Orchids among other plants (house plants also). We will have lunch while we tour the greenhouses. Bill Carter and Owen Holmes began selling orchids as cut flowers in the years following World War II when corsage flowers were in great demand for Valentine's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day. As lifestyles became less formal in the 1960's and the demand for cut flowers decreased, we began producing orchids for home growing. We started hybridizing orchids in the 1950's and developed our own modern laboratory for seed and tissue culture in the 1970's. Our hybridizing program has resulted in worldwide recognition for Carter & Holmes as a source for outstanding orchids - in particular, art-shade Cattleyas. Today, we ship orchid plants of many genera to hobbyists and commercial growers throughout the United States and to many countries around the world. After our fun-filled day learning about orchid’s and many other plants, we will head for home.

        Montreat Chapel of Prodigal

Montreat Chapel and Morganton Municipal Auditorium September 13, 2017

Come travel with Emerald Tours on our journey to Montreat Chapel of Prodigal to have service and see a magnificent Fresco painting. Then we will eat lunch on the campus (included). The Chapel of the Prodigal and the McGowan Center for Christian Studies is the embodiment of Montreat College’s mission. In mountain Gothic style the building houses both a chapel and educational facilities. The architect, Richard A. Henley of Charlotte, NC, has nestled the building into the gently sloping terrain and into the valley itself. Heavy timbers, over two hundred years old, are used for the roof trusses. The chapel is completed by an Allen Renaissance Organ and a splendid carillon which produces the sounds of sixty-one bells. The Ruth Bell Graham Prayer Room on the chapel balcony level features the beautiful calligraphy “Come Unto Me,” a verse chosen by Mrs. Graham. The McGowan Center of Christian Studies on the ground floor provides a home for the college’s Christian Ministries Division and a place for teaching, study and reflection on God’s Word. The interior of the Chapel of the Prodigal was designed as a complementary setting and focus for the large fresco, the Return of the Prodigal, creating an intimate, yet uplifting worship space. Montreat’s fresco is sixteen feet wide by seventeen and one-half feet tall and portrays the parable found in Luke Chapter 15. After squandering the inheritance he demanded from his father, the prodigal son returns home from a far country seeking forgiveness and acceptance. The father receives him with love and joy, reestablishing his place in the family. This parable of the unconditional love of God is considered by many to be the greatest story Jesus told. Montreat’s artistic interpretation is the only known true fresco by a master artist on the theme of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The Return of the Prodigal is Long’s first fresco on a wall built to his specifications. True fresco is a complicated and tedious technique. Powdered pigments suspended in pure water are applied to wet lime plaster. The pigments are absorbed into the plaster that cures to a rock hard crystalline surface becoming more luminous over time. The art of fresco was known in many ancient cultures, yet it was during the Italian Renaissance that true fresco achieved its greatest glory. Although never fully abandoned, this great art form is recovering in our time with renewed vigor. Ben Long is one of only a few master fresco artists working today. His excellence in the field of fresco painting has resulted in numerous commissions worldwide including Italy, France and seven sites in North Carolina. Our final destination will be Morganton before our travel home.

          Chattanooga Riverboat Cruise

Ruby Falls & Southern Bell Riverboat August 7-8, 2017

          Day 1
Come travel with Emerald Tours to Chattanooga, TN. for a fabulous Luncheon Riverboat Cruise on the famous Southern Bell. This 450 passenger excursion vessel was built In 1985 At Serodino Shipyard in Hales Bar, Tennessee to operate on the Tennessee River in-and-around the Chattanooga area. She is an interesting meld of two kinds of American Steamboats. Her design is based upon the Eastern River & Bay Boats but is adapted for the Tennessee River with some details that were common on the rivers but were not used in the East. An example is The Landing Stage (Or the Gangplank) which is a necessity on rivers where boats often land places where no Dock Facilities Exist, So she will be able to serve many places & can safely deliver her passengers at any point for special events. The Southern Belle is at Pier 2 and you have a choice of live entertainment, on one deck. On another deck is Bingo. We will have slow cooked Prime Rib & Chicken Wisconsin for lunch. This is an Experience you won’t want to miss! After our relaxing cruise down the river we will then travel to Ruby falls where we will see spectacular waterfalls and Incline at Lookout Mountain. A 145-foot underground waterfall is the main draw of this self-guided cave tour with gift shops & cafes. In 1928, Leo Lambert and a team of excavators found a breathtaking waterfall located over 1,120 feet below the surface of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. Lambert named the falls after his wife, Ruby, and opened the area as a public attraction in 1930. Today, Ruby Falls welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Come tour the falls for yourself and see why it has been one of the best Chattanooga attractions for over 85 years. After our fun-filled day, we will have dinner (on own) before departing for our hotel for check-in for the evening.
          Day 2
We will load luggage and have breakfast at Cracker Barrel (included) before out travel to Scottsboro Alabama to visit Unclaimed Baggage where you may browse and find some unique things. Emerald Tours Presents: The Ark and Creation Museum August 10-12, 2017

Day 1: The bus will arrive at Emerald Tours for an early morning departure for Kentucky. Our first attraction will be The Creation Museum. The state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot museum brings the pages of the Bible to life, casting its characters and animals in dynamic form and placing them in familiar settings. Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden. Children play and dinosaurs roam near Eden’s Rivers. The serpent coils cunningly in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Majestic murals, great masterpieces brimming with pulsating colors and details, provide a backdrop for many of the settings. The area within the museum has been divided into unusually configured spaces that allow for personal interaction with each of the 160 exhibits. Several parts of the museum, including the stunning forty-foot high portico with its cliff wall and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, flaunt open spaces and remarkable designs. Walk through the Garden of Eden. The themes of the exhibits resound in the theater presentations: Men in White, Six Days of Creation, and The Last Adam. Our Special Effects Theater, complete with rumbling seats and rising mists, takes visitors on a fantastic quest to find the real purpose and meaning of life. Each seat is a rocket launching pad in our Stargazers Planetarium. Prepare for lift-off. The digital projector showcases a spectacular gravity-defying spaceflight, a thrilling ride billions of light years away to the vast outer regions of our universe. Creatures great and small inhabit the three gardens that accentuate the landscape at the Creation Museum. Turtles rest on the logs in the lake, sunning themselves while a 12 foot topiary dinosaur strikes a fearsome pose in the rainforest garden. Bright flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the hillside garden, and the bog garden is home to carnivorous plants like the amazing Venus flytrap and pitcher plant. Over 6,000 plants have been placed within the lake, and 500 varieties of plants fill the gardens, displaying a rich palette of designs. Walk down Cherry-tree Lane. The arching bridges, tiled courtyards, and large gazebo are joined with a five-foot-wide paved walkway, just under a mile long, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Don’t miss a chance to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation in our Petting Zoo—something that’s sure to please children of all ages or just the child in you.
After our visit, we will travel the short distance to our hotel. (D)
